Abstract
This study, focusing on the “Ağırlama” ritual (folk dance) unique to the Yozgat-Yerköy region, presents a theoretical framework for how local music practice can be elevated beyond its descriptive boundaries to the level of a universal academic discipline. The methodological narrowing experienced by the music academy in Turkey in the context of the “artist-researcher” identity and the problem of not being able to synthesize artistic performance with scientific reporting standards constitutes the main starting point of the research. In this regard, the study adopts the “performance-based research” model proposed by Haseman (2006), ensuring that the researcher is at the center of the process with their own performer identity and positioning the practice itself as a field of knowledge production. In the process structured within qualitative research methods, field observation, participant observation, and document analysis methods were used by blending them with the principle of “theory-ladenness”. In the analysis phase, Yerköy Ağırlama; Not merely as a technical sequence of notes, but as living performance data, it has been filtered through an interdisciplinary lens, based on Schechner's (1985) concept of “restored behaviors,” Connerton's (1989) concept of “bodily memory,” and Small's (1998) concept of “musicking.” The research findings show that Yerköy Ağırlaması is shaped in the Karciğar makam and at a slow 2/4 tempo; these structural choices reflect a social consensus and a sociological force organizing the collective emotional world from the perspective of Merriam (1964) and Blacking (1973). From a choreographic perspective, the dignified steps exhibited with the “little finger hold” have been found to represent an active network of relationships that the participants have established with each other and with their history.
