Abstract

This study investigated the linguistic and non-linguistic elements of illustrated children’s books in the Reading Fish (Okuyan Balık) Electronic Library (RFEL) by Ministry of Education, Republic of Turkey in terms of gender roles. This electronic library, which can be accessed easily and free of charge, allows a wide audience, including small and visually challenged children, to benefit from these books, thanks to audio books. The study adopted a qualitative research design. Data were collected through document review using a “Questionnaire for Book Review in terms of Gender” developed by the researchers. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The following themes emerged: (1) gender, (2) colors of clothes and personal belongings, (3) occupations, (4) actions, (5) toys, and (6) venues. Although there is a change in favor of women in terms of gender distribution and the use of venues, gender roles have been perpetuated in terms of other themes. We discussed the results based on the results of previous studies and made recommendations to ensure gender equality in illustrated children’s books.
