Abstract

In this study, the opinions and learning experiences of the secondary school students about the experimental sets in the mathematics museum were analyzed. Through informal learning environments, the aim of this course is to make the connection between mathematics and real life students and to investigate the contribution of these environments to students' mathematical skills. Due to the limited number of studies conducted with informal learning environments and realistic mathematics education, this study was aimed to contribute to the domestic literature. The study was carried out within the scope of TUBITAK 4004 “I am aware of mathematics in life” Nature Education and Science Schools project. In a public school in the city of Güngören in Istanbul province, 24 students in the 8th grade were identified as study groups. Real life-based mathematics experiments were carried out with 48 experimental set in Rahmi Koç Museum Color Mathematics Department. A case study pattern was used in the research. After the trip, students were asked open-ended questions. In the questions, the students were asked questions about the experimental sets they liked and did not like, two new information they learned during the trip and their personal preferences related to the trip. As a result of the study, the students were able to discover the sides of mathematics that are reflected in the daily life of the students. It is thought that the application has been shown to contribute to the students' ability to recognize mathematics in life, to link mathematics with other disciplines and real life. It is thought that using informal learning environments in mathematics education will make mathematics education more qualified.
