Abstract

Different religions have beliefs, teachings and practices that may be important and provide support during time of illness, loss, dying and grief. For example, in Islam, the earthly world is but a test and a path to the next world. If a patient is in a coma, it is preferred that the patient be turned to face Mecca. When the person dies, the eyes are closed and prayers are said by the family. In Christianity, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is make for pure and strengthen. The sacrament is a source of grace and strength. In Judaism, when it is clear that one’s disease is incurable, most rabbis would permit withholding life-support systems and artificial hydation and nutrition. Close to death, the prayer is said for the patients in which the patient asks for God’s forgiveness. Hinduism, belief in reincarnation is prevalent and thus affects how Hindus may make end-of-life choices. In Buddhists, practice of meditation promotes wellness and healing. They see dying as a transition and support the natural dying process. In end of life, as health care professionals, we should think about the religious and spiritual beliefs of the patient and family, talk with the patient and family about their belief, rituals and customs and try to incorporate those practices, if the patient desires, into their clinical care.
