Abstract

Emotional labor is defined as the effort of employees, who are in face to face interaction with customers, to align their emotional manifestations with the standards defined by the organization. The emotional standards that organizations expect from their employees while interacting with customers are called emotional display rules. Employees’ keeping their real feelings under constant supervision to express the accepted emotion can lead them loose their sense of intimacy. Also, the presence of the pressure that an organization causes by supervising emotional displays of employees may increase work related stress. In addition, reducing job satisfaction and increasing burnout can be counted among possible negative consequences of emotional labor displays. In this study, it is aimed to identify the types of emotional labor displays shown by physicians who work in public and private hospitals to their patients; and that chosen displays’ effects on their burnout levels. The results of the survey applied to 136 participants analyzed with the statistical program SPSS and the relationship between emotional labor, burnout, and some demographic characteristics were tested

Özet

Duygusal emek, işi gereği müşterilerle birebir iletişim halinde olan işgörenlerin duygusal tepkilerini örgüt için kabul edilebilir şekle sokmak veya örgüt amaçlarıyla uyumlu duygu gösterimleri yaratmak amacıyla harcadıkları çaba şeklinde tanımlanabilir. Örgütlerin işgörenlerden bekledikleri duygusal tavırları standardize eden kurallar, duygusal davranış kuralları olarak adlandırılmaktadır. İşgörenlerin, gerçek duygularını sürekli denetim altında tutarak kendilerinden beklenilen duyguları ifade etmeleri, sürekli rol yapıyor oldukları hissine kapılmalarına ve samimiyet duygularını yitirmelerine neden olabilmektedir. Müşterilere gösterilmesi gereken duygusal tepkilerin örgütün denetimi altında bulunması, işgörenler için bir baskı unsuru haline gelerek işe bağlı stresi de artırabilmektedir. Bunların yanı sıra, işgörenlerin iş doyumu düzeylerini düşürmesi ve tükenmişlik seviyelerini artırması da duygusal emek gösteriminin olası olumsuz sonuçları arasında yer almaktadır. Bu araştırmada; Manisa ilinde faaliyet gösteren özel ve kamu hastanelerinde görev yapan doktorların hastalarına karşı sergiledikleri duygu gösterimleri; duygusal emeğin boyutları olan derinlemesine, yüzeysel veya samimi davranış şeklinde üç boyutta değerlendirilmiş; bu üç davranış tipinin bireylerin tükenmişlik seviyeleri üzerindeki etkisini ölçmek amaçlanmıştır. 136 katılımcıya uygulanan anket sonuçları SPSS programında değerlendirilmiş; duygusal emeğin tükenmişlik ve bazı demografik özellikler ile ilişkisi test edilmiştir
