Abstract

In this study, trade openness, financial development, the relationship between human capital and real GDP in Turkey for the period of 1987-2017 were investigated using the extended Cobb-Douglas production function. In order to determine whether there is a relationship between the variables, ARDL bound test was performed and it was found that there is a co-integration between trade openness, financial development, human capital and real GDP in the long term. Long-term coefficient estimates show that the trade openness has a positive and statistically significant effect on real GDP. When the other coefficients are examined, it was concluded that all variables except financial development have positive and statistically significant effects on real GDP in the long run, but financial development negatively affects real GDP. The results obtained from the VAR Granger causality test conducted to determine the direction of the causality relationship between variables show that there is a one-way causality relationship from economic growth to commercial openness, financial development and human capital. Thereby confirming the presence of precursors trade growth hypothesis in Turkey. In addition, there are bidirectional causality relationships between trade openness and financial development, and between human capital and financial development.
