Abstract

Aim: This study was conducted to compare life satisfaction and social anxiety levels of women with and without urinary incontinence. Material and Methods: The study was conducted in a cross-sectional, case-control study type with a total of 112 women (56 women with urinary incontinence and 56 women without urinary incontinence). The research is available in the obstetric outpatient clinics of a public hospital in Izmir province between February 2017 and February 2018. Data were collected by using Questionnaire form, Life Satisfaction Scale and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale. Data were analyzed by chi-square, t-test, and Spearman correlation analysis. Results: In the study, it was found that women with urinary incontinence (16.1 ± 5.8) had lower life satisfaction scores than women without (25.2 ± 3.6) and this difference was statistically significant. In addition, Social anxiety and social avoidance subscales and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale total scale (40.7 ± 21.9) points averages of women with urinary incontinence were significantly higher than women without urinary incontinence (total: 29.9 ± 17.8). Conclusion: In this study, women with urinary incontinence were found to have lower levels of life satisfaction and higher levels of social anxiety than those without. In line with these results, health workers working in primary care, knowing the negative consequences of urinary incontinence in female life; they should prevent their development, direct the complainants to appropriate centers and take an active role in the diagnosis and treatment of women experiencing this problem.
