Abstract

Differentiated instruction approach (DIA) offers teachers a framework and a set of principles for responsive teaching. The purpose of this research is to identify the practices of a classroom teacher that can be associated to DIA. Th e participant of the research is a first grade teacher working in a primary school determined by the typical sampling technique. In the research - which was designed with the case study, one of the qualitative approach - data were collected through observation, documents, and interview. The observation formed the main data source, and lasted 12 weeks. The data were analyzed using content analysis. Participant teacher’s practices for students with low readiness, and integrated students can be associated to differentiation in terms of content and process. Teacher being able to observe the individual difference of her students, and able to evaluate them on the spot allow her to implement practices reflecting the DIA. However, no differentiation was seen based on the differences of interest, and students with high readiness level. In addition, the teacher didn’t mention the product dimension while making adjustments in the dimension of content, process and learning space. The reason for the deficiencies here is the lack of planning on the basis of pre-assessment and grouping. Based on the results, suggestions were made for teacher education.
