Abstract

Purpose: We evaluted clinical features, progression and surcigal results in patients presenting with epiretinal membranes.Patients and Methods: Patients presenting with epiretinal membranes between 1996 and 2000 were examined retrospectively. Clinical features, visual acuities, fundus examinations and fundus fluorescein anjiograms were evaluated. Preoperative and postoperative visual acuities, follow-up period and surgical results were assessed in patients that had undergone pars plana vitrectomy + membrane peeling. Results: In this period, 90 patients with epiretinal membranes were examined in retina unit. 39 eyes in 33 patients were found to be followed up for at least one year. Snellen visual acuities were 0.4 and lower in!8 eyes (%54,5). Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) + membrane peeling was performed in 13 of these (%33,3). Etiologic classification of these 13 eyes revealed 4 cases with idiopathic epiretinal membranes, 3 cases with trauma, 3 cases with retinal vein occ-lusion, 2 cases with diabetic retinopathy and 1 case which had undergone retinal detachment surgery previously. After vitreoretinal surgery, visual results showed diversity according to the etiologic factor of the epiretinal membrane. Vitreoretinal surgery was not performed'in cases with visual acuities 0.5 and higher. In these cases, visual acuities did not change in the follow-up period. In two of operated 13 eyes, cataracts developed and extracapsular cataract extraction + intraocular lens implantation were performed. In one eye, a retinal tear was noted in inferior quadrant peroperatively and silicone tamponode was employed. Conclusions: Epiretinal membranes show slow progression with regard to visual acuity. PPV+ membrane peeling which is performed in cases with symptoms such as decreased vision or distortion, has a low complication rate with anatomic and functional success depending on the etiology.
