Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate results of probing application in the patients older than 12 months with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Method: Ninety-six eyes of 76 patients with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction were evaluated retrospectively between May 1998 and January 2002. The mean age of the patients was 20.2 months (14-78 months). Probing was applied for the aim that treatment to the patients and the patients were followed along the mean time of 7.4 months (5-14 months). Results: After first probing in 67 eyes (69.8%) and after second probing in 9 eyes (9.4%), in totally 76 eyes (79.2%), the success was ensured. In 20 eyes (20.8%), the process was failed and bicanalicular silicone tube intubations were applied these eyes. In 7 eyes, nasolacrimal duct were not entered with the probe because of surgical failure. In 4 eyes, the haemorrhage that more than suggested was seen from their noses. Conclusions: In congenital nasolâcrimal duct obstruction treatment, probing application is an effective treatment method that has less complication in the patients who their nasolâcrimal ducts were not opened although the effective massages were applied to lacrimal sac area.
