Abstract

Aim: We aim to discuss autogenous tarsoconjunctival graft, hard palate graft and tarsocon¬junctival flap techniques we used in eyelid posterior lamella reconstruction. Method: Eyelid posterior lamellar reconstruction performed in the management of posteri¬or lamellar defect developed after tumor resection in 10 cases, and for entropion treatment in 1 case between the period of October 2001-April 2004. After tumor resection, all patients had eyelid defect that was more than 1/2 of the horizontal length of the eyelid. For reconstruction of posterior lamella, tarsoconjunctival grafts on 7 patients, hard palate mucosal grafts on 2 patients and tarsoconjunctival flaps on 2 patients were used. Results: Patients were followed up between 7-38 (avarage 18.7) months. Satisfactory eye¬lid stability and position encountered in 9 patients. Corneal epitheliopathy that was unresponsi¬ve to medical treatment developed in 1 patient treated with tarsoconjunctival graft. No other ocular surface disease were seen except this patient. Horizontal lid laxity detected in this patient and managed with tarsoraphy. One patient which was treated with hard palate mucosal graft had partial graft necrosis. The patient was followed up without treatment.because of nonexisting la-gophthalmia. Discussion: All three method we performed for posterior lamella reconstruction were offer satisfactory long-term eyelid position, stability and perfect mucosal lining. Patients should be followed up to detect recurrences of primary disease and potential ocular surface diseases after posterior lamellar reconstruction.
