Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of latanoprost on cystoid macular oedema in aphakic or pseudophakic eyes. Materials and Methods: Fifty five eyes of 55 aphakic or pseudophakic patients, none pre¬viously treated with latanoprost, were enrolled in this study. Forty five (82%) eyes were pseudophakic and 10 (18%) eyes aphakic. Latanoprost 0.005% a dosage of one drop was given at bedtime, as a first line therapy or added onto the patients' current regimen. All of the patients underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, including best corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure measurement and fundoscopy. During the follow-up, if best corrected visual acuity was found to have decreased by more than one Snellen line, a fluorescein angiography was performed. Results: Patients were followed up for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 36 months (me¬an 17.0±8.1 months). Best corrected visual acuity had deteriorated in 11 (22%) patients, and maintained in 44 (78%) patients. Cystoid macular oedema was documented by fluorescein angiography in 3 patients. Two of them were associated with non proliferative diabetic retinopathy and the other was associated with central retinal vein occlusion. Conclusion: Latanopost has no adverse effect on macula in aphakic or pseudophakic eyes with normal functioning blood retinal barrier. As latanoprost and the other prostaglandin analogues are the most powerful glaucoma medications, ophthalmologists could prescribe this medication to aphakic or pseudophakic patients. Patients with diabetes mellitus or other retinal vascular disease should be followed up more frequently.
