Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the ocular signs in patients with chronic renal failure. Materials and Methods: 60 eyes of 30 patients (Twenty were male and ten were female) with chronic renal failure on regular haemodialysis were examined. The mean age of the patients was 39.26 months. The mean duration of chronic renal failure was 61.4 months. Central corneal thickness was measured by ultrasound pachymeter. Results were compared with age and sex matched 30 patients of the control group. Anterior and posterior segment photographs were taken in all patients. Tear secretions was evaluated by Schirmer's method. The results of blood samples and demographical data were recorded in all patients. Results: Best corrected visual acuity in 20 of 30 patiens (%66.6) was 20/20. Corneo-con-junctival calcification was graded according to Porter and Crombie classification. Eight patients were graded as grade 0, 14 patients1 grade 1, 5 patients grade 2 and 3 patients grade 3. The mean duration of chronic renal failure was 12 months in grade 0, 63 months in grade 1, 134 months in grade 2 and 110 months in grade 3 patients. 10 patients (%33.3) had pinguecula. 3 patients (%10) had a Schirmer, value less than 5mm. There was no statisticaly significant dif¬ference in corneal thickness between the study and corneal group. (542±31.48) (539+21.71) (p>0.05) Sixteen patients had hypertensive retinopathy, 5 had diabetic retinopathy, 3 had glau¬coma, 3 had cataract, 1 had central retinal ven occlusion and 1 had macular pigmentation. Conclusion: Eyes are influenced markedly from chronic renal failure. Corneo-conjunctival calcification is seen frequently and calcification rate increases during the illness. We found that the central corneal thickness in chronic renal failure does not differ from healthy population. Also, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, anemia and retinal complications are seen more frequently in chronic renal failure. Therefore the examination of the retina in these patients should be performed frequently and regularly.
