Abstract

The complication rate of radiofrequency cath- eter ablation varies depending on patient characteristicsand treatment, and has been reported to be approximately3%. Esophageal irritation is one significant complicationof catheter ablation, and its most common result is atrio- esophageal fistulae. However, rarely, unexpected compli- cations and clinical variants occur due to irritation of thevagal nerve or peri-esophageal tissue without fistula for- mation. In this case report, attention is drawn to this rarecomplication in two cases, one of which occurred afterparaseptal-epicardial accessory pathway ablation, and theother after atrial fibrillation ablation. Both were symptom- atic with severe gag reflex.
