Abstract

Polymyositis is an idiopathic inflammatory muscle disease of unknown etiology that causes varying degrees of decreased muscle power especially in proximal muscles. The disease may be associated with other collagen vascular, autoimmune or infectious disorders. Concerning the anaesthetic management of a patient with polymyositis, there is a little information on the appropriate use of muscle relaxants. It is known that the patient is sensitive to nondepolarizing muscle relaxants and the use of antagonist drug (reversal) may cause muscle weakness or severe dysrhytmia. In this article, we report anaesthetic management of a patient, who had been diagnosed as polymyositis during follow-up of local recurrence of an operated epidermoid ovarian cancer.
