Abstract

Aim: Burnout can be explained as; manifesting insensitivity towards people working with, emotionally feeling burnout, and a decrease in emotions of personal success. Burnout is mostly seen in professionals such as; MDs, nurses, and teachers who work in close contact with people. The aim of our study is to investigate the factors and sociodemographic features accompanying them, which effect levels of job satisfaction and burnout in specialists of Anaesthesiology and Reanimation (AR) and residents working in high-stress workplaces such as; operation theatre, intensive care, and pain clinics.Materials and Methods: AR specialists working in hospitals in provincial center of Bursa, researchers receiving AR education in Uludağ University for more than one year, and the academic staff of the university, were included in the study. Maslach Burnout Inventory which focuses on emotional burnout, becoming insensitive, and personal success; the sociodemographic data collection form which investigates personal characteristics and workplace conditions; and the approval form describing the object of the study, were all sent to 60 physicians. The feedback datas received as 46 forms, were statistically subjected to an assessment according to Pearson correlation, Mann-Whitney U, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results: The ages of cases participated in the study were between 26-60 (38.8±9.1) and 27 of them were female (58.7 %), 19 were (41.3 %) male, 41 (89.1 %) were married, and 5 (11.9 %) were bachelor, divorced, or widow/er. 31 (67.4 %) cases were having a child and 15 (32.6 %) cases were not. Gender, having a child, title, duty hours, duration of sleep, having the wish for choosing the same profession again, and the duration of service in anesthesiology, were all determined to be associated with different levels of burnout. No relation between marital status, the hospital worked in, and the income level, was found. Conclusion: It is concluded that; the anaesthetists, working in health sector which involves frequent human relations, were predisposed to occupational burnout and thus the required precautions should be taken and the risk factors should be identified.
