Abstract

Spinal anesthesia is widely used anesthesia technique for inguinal hernia repair. Levobupivacaine is the isolated S-enantiomer of bupivacaine and may be a favorable alternative to spinal bupivacaine as it is less toxic to the cardiovascular and central nervous system. In this prospective, randomized, double-blind study the clinical efficacy and motor and sensory block of 0.5 % levobupivacaine with 0.5 % bupivacaine in spinal anaesthesia for Levobupivacaine (n=20), Group Bupivacaine (n=20). Spinal anesthesia was achieved with 3 mL of study solution injected in the subarachnoid space at the lumbar 2/3 interspace. We assessed blockade quality and duration with the pinprick test; motor blockade was documented by using modified Bromage scale. Blood pressure, heart rate, pulse oximetry were recorded. There were no significant differences between the two groups in the quality of sensory and motor block or in haemodynamic change. Anaesthesia was adequate and patient satisfaction good in all cases. Levobupivacaine, the pure S(-)-enantiomer of racemic bupivacaine is an equally effective local anesthetic for spinal anesthesia compared with racemic bupivacaine.
