Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate whether there are any relationships between the central retinal thickness and the duration of diabetes, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level or type of antidiabetics in type 2 diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy. Materials and Method: The study was conducted between January 2011 - December 2012. 130 eyes of 70 type 2 diabetic patients without DR and 140 eyes of 70 healthy individuals with similar demographic characteristics were included in this study. The central retinal thickness of both groups was measured with optical coherence tomography. Duration of diabetes, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) level and type of antidiabetic were recorded in diabetic patients. Results were evaluated through the SPSS program. Results: Both the diabetic group and the control group include 31 (44%) males and 39 (56%) females (the average age was 53.52±10.15 and 52.79 ± 10.73, respectively), the mean serum glucose level, HbA1c level and the central retinal thickness of the diabetic g roup were 188.76±72.73, 8.47±1.99 and 218.08 ±14.38μm, respectively. The central retinal thickness was 221.14μm in patients taking oral antidiabetic and 213,52μm in patients taking insulin. Conclusion: There was no statistical differences in the central retinal thicknesses between the patients group and the control group. The central retinal thickness of patients using insulin was lower than patients taking oral antidiabetics.

Bulgular: Kontrol ve diyabetik grupların her ikisinde çalışmaya alınan 70 hastanın 31’i erkek (%44), 39’u kadındı (%56).
