Abstract

Government uses fiscal policy instruments to achieve certain social and economic objectives. Nowadays, consumer confidence index, which shows consumer trends, has begun to be increasingly important. The relationship between consumer confidence and the fiscal policy is the starting point of this study. What sort of policies are needed to increase confidence of consumers is another research question. The relationship between consumer confidence and fiscal policy instruments in Turkey is examined for the period of 2006M1-2017M8. As a result of the analysis made with an ARDL model, a short- and long-term relationship has been found between consumer confidence index and government revenue is investigated with ARDL models. Empirical findings have revealed that when public revenue increases, which means contractionary fiscal policies are applied, consumer confidence index increases as well.
