Abstract

Purpose: Anal incontinence means inability to control the release of flatus or stool. It is an important personal and social problem for the persons who have this pathologic entity. Reliable prevalence ratio is not available about incontinence. Most important cause of incontinence is obstetric trauma. In particular, women over 45 years old with an experience in vaginal birth have higher incontinence ratio. In this article, data of patients treated for anal incontinence were discussed. The purpose of this study was to remind that sphincter disruption may still occur with high ratio after the vaginal delivery and surgical intervention may improve the life quality of these patients. Patients and Method: We retrospectively analyzed the patients with anal incontinence between 1980 and 2003, and 24 patients were detected. Eight out of 24 patients treated after diverting colostomy and 2 patients was admitted emergency service. Eighteen patients was performed anal electromyelography both in the preoperative and postoperative period. Results: All patients underwent surgical procedure with various causes that were followed as: obstetric trauma (21 cases) ( 3 with rectovaginal fistula ), fistulotomy (1 case), perineal ripp due to bull crash (1 case), and gunshot (1 case). Conclusion: Mean followed-up time was 4.5 years ( range:1-25 years ). Four recurrences were observed. One of these patients had recurrence after two years and reoperated in our clinic. Remainders were observed 1 or 3 years after procedure and were managed in other institutes.
