Abstract

Ostomy and continent diversion surgical procedures are integral to the management of many gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract diseases. Because ostomy surgery alters external appearance and renders an individual incontinent, it can have a negative impact on life-style. Therefore an individualized and comprehensive assessment of stoma and peristomal area must be a part of nursing care. Postoperative nursing assessment and management help to prevent potential impairment of stoma function and peristomal skin integrity. This article presents a conceptual framework to help stoma and peristomal site assessment.
