Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the risk factors and perinatal outcomes associated with umbilical cord prolapse. Methods: 22 cases of umbilical cord prolapse occuring at Süleyman Demirel University Hospital and İsparta Women and Children's Hospital from 01.08.1997 to 01.08.2005 were evaluated retrospectively. Two controls per case were randomly selected among the deliveries that took place during the same day. Results: During the study period, 22 cases with umbilical cord prolapse out of 28124 deliveries were identified. The incidence of umbilical cord prolapse was 1 in 907 deliveries (0.11%). There were statisticaly significant differences between the groups with respect to presentation and multiparity. No statistically significant differences were present in age, mean gestational weeks and birth weights. Conclusion: Our study revealed that abnormal fetal presentation and multiparity are associated with an increased risk of umbilical cord prolapse. Pregnancies of multiparous patients and malpresentations need special attention and care.
