Abstract

Objective: To measure the effect of stronsium ranelate and raloxiphene on bone mineral dansity and urine n-telopeptides in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis. Material Method: Stronsium ranelate was randomly administered to 30 patients with osteporosis and the rest of the 60 patients was administered raloxifene 60 mg/day for 6 months. At the end of the study bone mineral dansity measured by DEXA and urine n telopeptides was measured and compared in and between the groups. Results: At the end of the 6 months of treatment BMD in spine was increased 0.0080 g/cm2 in raloxifene group and 0.010 g/cm2 in SR group. Hip BMD was increased 0.007 g/cm2 in raloxifene group and 0.009 g/cm2 in SR group respectively. The difference between the groups was not statistically significant. The difference of n-telopeptides in urine in raloxifene group was -22,4±24,2 nmol BCE/nmol creatinin, in SR group was -33,9±24,1 nmol BCE/nmol creatinin respectively, and difference between the groups was statistically significant. Conculusion : It is expected to find increase in bone mineral dansity in spine and hip after SR treatment will be 2.6 % and 2.7 % respectively after 1 year of treatment. These are expected to be 2.1 % and 1.9 % respectively for the raloxifene treatment.
