Abstract

Bacteria Isolated From Pediatric Hematology Oncology Clinic Patients and Their Antibiotic Susceptibility Patterns Objective: Evaluation of culture results of patients hospitalised at the Pediatric Haematology and Oncology Wards during one year period and to determine the bacterial etiology and antibiotic resistance patterns. Methods: Cultures (blood, urine, wound, stool, sputum, cerebrospinal fluid, and nasopharngeal swab) taken from patients hospitalised during January 2007 and January 2008 due to fever and/or suspicion of infection were evaluated for bacterial etiology and antibiotic resistance, retrospectively. Results: Significant bacterial growth was detected in 48 (7.3 %) of 650 cultures. Blood, urine and wound cultures were positive in 8.2 %, 5.9 % and 40 % of specimens, respectively. Sputum, nasopharyngeal, stool and cerebrospinal fluid cultures did not reveal any growth. Gram positive cocci were the leading bacterial pathogen in blood cultures (70 %). Among 52 isolates, coagulase negative staphylococci (25 %), Klebsiella pneumoniae (17.3 %), Escherichia coli (E. coli) (15.3 %) and enterococci (15.3 %) were most commonly detected. Among 7 Enterococcus spp. isolated from blood one was vancomycin resistant (VRE). 90 % of staphylococci isolates were resistant to penicilline and clindamycin while all were sensitive to vancomycin, teicoplanin and linezolide. 37.5 % of E. coli isolates and 35% of K.pneumoniae isolates were extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) positive. Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates detected twice from one patient was multi drug resistant. Conclusion: Bacteria are a common cause of infection in immunosuppressed patients. Knowledge about antibiotic susceptibility pattern is important for appropriate therapeutic approach

Kan kültürü üremelerinin % 70'i Gram pozitif bakterilerden oluşmaktaydı.
