Abstract

Evaluation of Patients with Primary Nocturnal Enuresis and Their Mothers using Depression Scales Objective: Primary nocturnal enuresis is one of the most frequently encountered condition in childhood and it is defined as intermittent bed-wetting during sleeping hours at night after 5 years of age. This condition may cause behavioral and psychiatric disturbances in children, and their mothers. The aim of this study is to evaluate depression levels of children with primary nocturnal enuresis and their mothers, as well. Methods: Fourty children diagnosed as primary nocturnal enuresis who were responsive to desmopressin treatment lasting for 3 months were enrolled in the study. For children, Depression Scale for Children, and for their mothers Beck Depression Scale was used to evaluate depression level before and after the treatment. The depression scale scores of the patients, and their mothers before and after the treatment were compared. Results: The mean age of the children included in the study was 10.8±2.2 years (7-15 years) and 21 (52.5 %) of them were male, 19 (47.5 %) were female. The mean score of the children as assessed with Depression Scale for Children before and after the treatment were 10.5±6 and 8±5.5 points respectively. In children the mean depression score after the treatment was found to be significantly decreased relative to the mean score before the treatment (p
