Abstract

In this study, vehicle tracking and navigation systems were put under discussion. The recent technology on the use of GPS in navigation and tracking systems was explored and a sample navigation software was developed in order to expose the expectations from a decent navigation system. Industry standard GIS data formats were exploited for template maps. Real-time and post-processing of tracking data were explained in detail. A new approach was proposed for collecting GIS data using GPS navigation systems and a possible alternative way of navigation improvement was put into practice. This approach includes the useof vector data for comparing the GPS-originated coordinates with vector templates. Although this technique is very similar to map-matching, it differs in terms of the data used and technique applied. Besides, this study may form a basis of simple and cheap real-time GPS-GIS integration studies for future. Finally the comparison technique was also recommended as a tool for accuracy comparison of different scaled vector maps.
