Abstract

It is a well-known fact that GPS, a space-born positioning technique, has been revolutionary in surveying and geodesy. Scientists and engineers in the world and in our country have expanded the applications of GPS use to where the designers of the system could not imagine. GPS, however, is not a system that has endless usage, and of course, there are also limitations to it, for instance not applicable in places where insufficient number (less than four) of or no satellites are available such as in urban canyons, forests, under bridges, tunnels and inside buildings. "Pseudolites " have been developed in order to make use of GPS inareas that signal transmission is hardly possible or not possible at all. Pseudolites can be used for navigational purposes as well as in geodesy and surveying. It is thought that pseudolites in a few years to come will have a widespread use with or without GPS, and will in even near future replace electronic tacheometers (total-stations). In this paper pseudolites that are new to our country are briefly explained, and summary of subjects concerning technical and applicative sides of pseudolites and a few pseudolite positioning techniques are also included.
