Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of prolonged local insulin injections on the viability of cartilage grafts. For this purpose 20 New Zelland rabbits were used. Cartilage grafts of 10x20 mm harvested the rabbits' ears were inserted subdermally to the interscapular region. The rabbits were divided into two groups of 10. The first group received local 1 IU Humulin-N insulin injection pe-roperatively followed by 0.3 IU/kg/day Humulin-N insulin injections subdermally to interscapular region for duration of four months. The second group constituted the control group. After four months, cartilage grafts removed from both groups were examined macroscopically and histopathologically. The grafts from insulin receiving' group were found to have preserved the size and histopathological structure closer to their originals than the control group. Increase in cartilage thickness, increased pericartilagenous fibrosis and microscopically new bone and cartilage formation were detected in the control group. We believe these findings could suggest that the grafts in the control group were prone to more extensive long term changes.
