Abstract

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), is a disease that common in the community. Age, gender and of various factors such as smoking, has been linked to increased risk of developing OSAS. In this study we aimed at describing the relationship between OSAS and age, gender , smoking status. Our study has been conducted on 104 cases 26 (24.8 %) of which are female and 79 (75.2 %) male who were applied the polisomnography examination Department of Chest Disease, Sureyyapasa Chest and Chest Surgery Training and Research Hospital, between January 2008 and May 2008. The ages of the cases averaged out to 48.89±11.25. 66.66% of them were smokers. The cases were divided into 4 according to apnea/hipopnea index and 25.7% of them were diagnosed with habitual snoring, 21.9% with mild OSAS, 22.9% with moderate OSAS, and 29.5 with severe OSAS. The control group was composed of patients with a diagnosis of simple snoring. The patients, who filled in a form including personal information, additional disease, smoking history were applied. As a result; the frequency of developing OSAS increases dramatically with age and male gender. There is no relationship between OSAS and smoking status.
