Abstract

The Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst is an uncommon lesion that demonstrates considerable histopathologic diversity and variable clinical behavior. Although it is widely considered to represent a cyst, some investigators prefer to classify it as a neoplasm. The most notable feature of this pathologic entity is histopathological and includes a cyst lining demonstrating characteristic “ghost” epithelial cells. Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst is often associated with impacted or displaced adjacent teeth and because of the calcified masses they can be misdiagnosed as odontomas. About 65% of the cases are found in the incisor and canine areas. The lesion’s occurrence has no significant difference in both maxillary and mandibulary regions. Patients may range in age from infant to elder. Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst is usually unilocular, well-defined in radiolucency, although the lesion may occasionally appear multilocular in some of the cases. Radioopaque structures within the lesion, either irregular calcifications or tooth like densities, are present in about half of the cases. Root resorption or migration of adjacent teeth is seen with a certain frequency. The prognosis for a patient with calcifying odontogenic cyst is good; only a few recurrences after enucleation have been reported. In this case report; a 25-year-old female patient who has a calcified odontogenic cyst which diagnosed by coincidence is presented.
