Abstract

A new thickness profile in parabolic form containing two geometric parameters is proposed for rotating variable thickness disks. Using this profile function analytical solutions are obtained in terms of hypergeometric functions for the elastic deformation of rotating solid and annular disks. In the case of annular disks, free, radially constrained and pressurized boundary conditions are treated. It is shown mathematicaly that in the limiting case the variable thickness solution reduces to the solution of constant thickness disk. The distributions of stress and displacement are obtained and compared to those in the uniform thickness disks at the same angular velocity. It is shown that the stresses in parabolic disks are lower in magnitute than those in uniform thickness disks under the same conditions. Using the von Mises yield criterion; the effect of various parameters on the elastic limit angular velocities is investigated. The calculated elastic limit angular velocities are found to be affected significantly by the reduction in the edge thickness of the disk.
