Abstract

It was extremely important to determine which concepts or topics in the chemistry curriculum students had difficulty in understanding for the meaningful learning. The purpose of this study was to determine the concepts in the units “Matter and Its Properties” and “Elements and Compounds” lycee-I students had difficulty in understanding. With this aim, a questionnaire consisting of 28 concepts and an achievement test consisting of 17 questions were prepared and implemented to 97 lycee-I students. In addition, interviews were conducted to 5 chemistry teachers and 15 students. The results indicated the students found the topic “Matter and Its Properties” easy, the topics “Solubility and The Factors Affecting Solubility, Heat-Temperature, Elements and Compounds” difficult, “The Law of Definite and Multiple Proportions” very difficult.
