Abstract

In this study, the effects of a CEM I 42.5 R and a CEM II B/(L-W) 42.5 R cement, products of the same plant, on the properties of concrete were investigated, comparatively. For this purpose, six different concrete mixes were produced at three water/cement (w/c) ratios. The unit weight, air content, slump, slump loss, and slump flow of fresh concrete were determined. Furthermore, compressive strength, transport properties and length change caused by drying-shrinkage of hardened concrete were studied As it was expected, regardless of the cement type, concrete properties were suffered upon increasing w/c ratio. Except for early strength, water sorptivity and drying-shrinkage of concrete, CEM II showed better performance than CEM I. This improvement was attributed to the pore refinement as well as the grain refinement effects of mineral admixture in concrete. The increase in water sorptivity and drying-shrinkage of concrete, in the presence of mineral admixture, seems to be arisen from the conversion of macro capillary pores into micro-capillaries.
