Abstract

Landslide is one of the most common natural hazards with significant unfavorable effect on structuresand environment. Detailed geological and geotechnical investigations are the back bone of preventingpossible economic loss of property and life, especially during residential planning stage. This studycovers the engineering geological investigation of the landslide, which took place in Neogene aged soilsnearby the main road to Memlik district in Ankara. The south section of main accumulation zone of theslide has been excavated and several structures have been constructed up to date. Shallow slides andrecent damage on the road to the resident area indicate the movement is in east direction. The dimensions of the slide were determined with sampling from the sliding surface. The classification of thesamples was conducted with the testing of saturated shear strength parameters. Residual cohesion andinternal friction were extracted from back analyses, which satisfied the limit equilibrium. Several pondsand water leaking points were encountered within the depletion zone of the landslide. The maximumslope is 13°, regarding to the infinite slope model. Brownish slope debris material slides on the greygreen colored clays parallel to the slope. The grey-green colored clay and slope debris exhibit anirregular sliding surface with no distinct circular or non-circular shape. The failure surface where effectivestress is zero was evaluated by finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the location of the slidingsurface was determined by the shear deformation and strength factor variation. One of the main reasonsof the landslides might be the tectonically active vertical uplifting in addition to the unrestrainedurbanization and excavations.
