Abstract

It is very important to apply wind frequency analysis in wind erosion risk analysis and control projects. Although various studies have been conducted on the effect of wind speed on wind erosion, the role of the return periods of wind speed has not been taken into account in most of these studies. In this study, various return period values of maximum wind speeds of semi-arid Konya Province, which is subjected to wind erosion, are calculated. In order to test the regional homogeneity, discordance and heterogeneity measures, two statistics based on the L-moments method, were used. The most appropriate distribution for the homogenous region was determined as generalized logistic distribution and by using this distribution, wind speeds with 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 500 years return periods, were obtained. The results obtained from the study can benefit from the estimation of the wind speed of various return periods for the projects developed for measures that can be taken against this risk in Konya and similar regions with arid-semi-arid climate, which are frequently exposed to wind erosion.
