In August 2004, a descriptive study was conducted to evaluate the general health and anemia state of 7-18 years old children and adolescents at Social Care and Children Protection Institution, Ankara Atatürk Nursery. Of 249 children and adolescents, 139 (55.8%) participated in the study. A questionnaire and a physical examination form were used to collect the data. The average age of the children was 10. Of the children, 46.8% were male and 53.2% were female. They have been living in the nursery for 47.9 months on the average. There was fatigue as a complaint in 48.9% of the children. Other complaints were abdominal pain (38.1%), palpitation (36.7%), slavering at sleep (36.7%) and headache (35.3%). 25.2% of the children tcld that they saw parasite in their stool. It was determined that 30.2% of the children had. diarrhea as a complaint. Anemia was detected in 4.7% of the children. The body mass index was below normal in 48.2% of the children. Submandibular lymphadenopathy was detected in 43.2% of the children. In 19.2% of the children, the visual activity was below 7/10 for both eyes. One or more decayed tooth was diagnosed in 40.3% of the children. Of the children, 64.8% said that they brushed their teeth less than twice a day or none at all. The children should be examined medically at their reception to the nursery and regularly afterwards. Children should be educated in general and oral health. They should develop proper behaviour in tooth-brushing.
