Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD), which is the second most common disease after Alzheimer's disease, is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that mostly affects geriatrics. Scientists have been continuing their studies for years for pathogenesis, prophylaxis, and definitive treatment of this disease. While the origin and mechanism of PD are still unclear, recent research, including retrospective and post-mortem data from patients and laboratory studies with animals has focused the attention of the scientific world on the vagus-nerve, connects the gastrointestinal tract-brain axis with these two structures. In laboratory studies, mouse-rat models are mostly used because they are small, cheap and easily manipulated, reproduce quickly and frequently, and have a short life span. However, dogs that have a close diet with humans also struggle with PD; It is more similar to humans than rodents in behavioral, anatomical, physiological, and microbiological terms. In recent studies; Dogs with Alzheimer's-like brain pathology; in its neurodegenerative changes and anatomy more overlap with humans than mice. It is also stated that the developed canine gastrointestinal organoid system can be used as a new model to examine human intestinal diseases. Thus, it is thought that PD in canine models can shed light on the relationship between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain axis.
