Abstract

Introduction: In the past primary total hip replacement had begun to be a widespreadily used modality of treatment, as a result revision operations had begun to be done widespreadily. Revision of cemented primary total hip arthroplasties is a more complex problem when compared with revison of uncemented primary total hip arthroplasties. Patients and Method: In this study, results of 38 revision total hip arthroplasties were reviewed. Self-locking revison stem (Wagner stem) and uncemented acetabular cup (Standard cup) were used for revisions. Initial procedure was primary total hip replacement in 28 cases and primary hemiarthroplasty in 10 cases. Indication for revision was sympthomatic aseptic loosening in 36 cases. One case was revised for femoral fracture and another for femoral component fracture. Acetabular revision was done in all cases except the one with femoral component fracture. Mean follow-up time was 49 months (22-79 mo). Results: Mean Harris hip score which was 47.5 points before revision raised to 91.4 points. All the femoral components and 37 of 38 acetabular components were radiologically stable at latest follow-up. No cases were rerevised.Discussion: Early results are promising and replacement of loose cemented femoral stems with self locking revision stems is a succesfull way of revisions.
