Abstract

We performed augmentation cystoplasty on 8 patients in the last three years. Ages of the patients (6 male and 2 female) ranged between 4-65 (mean 32.4) years. Operations performed for contracted bladder secondary to chronic cystitis in 6 patients and for neurogenic bladder in 2 patients. Preoperative bladder volumes were between 90-160 (mean 120) ml. Vesicoureteral reflux was detected in 3 renal units of 2 children with neurogenic bladder. We used gastric segment in 2 patients and ileal segment in the others. No major complications were encountered in the postoperative course. Mean follow-up time was 18 months, and average bladder volume was 420 ml at the 6th month. All patients voided spontaneously except 2 with neurogenic bladder. Dysuria and complaints of urinary infection persisted in early postoperative period in 4 patients with adequate bladder capacity after ileal augmentation. Antibacterial suppression therapy was given to these patients. No symptoms of urinary infection arose in 2 patients who underwent augmentation with gastric segment. We observed neither infection nor deterioration of upper tract in 2 children who perform self-intermittent catheterization. We conclude that gastrocystoplasty brings solution to mucus and infection problems, while ileocystoplasty is advantageous in reaching larger volumes. Both procedures may be used in modern urology clinics in preferred patients.
