Abstract

Epilepsy is a common neurologic disease, seen in all age groups. Population-based neuroepidemiologic studies make it easier to get more data about the risk factors and nature of disease. But social acceptance of epilepsy is difficult. Therefore, neuroepidemiologic studies depending on hospital records are also needed in addition to population based studies. In the present study, we investigated the frequency of epilepsy among the patients applying to the hospitals in Manisa city, for various reasons between lanuary 1, 1997 and January 1, 1998. Data sources were from in-patient and out-patient records of all of the hospitals in Manisa, the records of the private neurologists and the EEG laboratory of Celal Bayar Medical School, which is the only one in the city. The records of 912 patients who were diagnosed as epilepsy by a neurologist during one year period were evaluated. According to these records, we determined the prevalance rates according to decades and sexes. We found the prevalance of epilepsy as 3.52% in the whole population, 3.70% in males, 3.35% in females, 2.07% in boys under ten years, 1.59% in girls under ten years. We think that well-kept patient records in all health institutions will provide more detailed and valuable results.
