Abstract

The arginase, mainly found in liver (L-arginine ureohydrolase EC 3.5.3.1) is the final enzyme of urea cycle which breaks down arginine into ornithine and urea. This study was carried out on 40 patients (29F, 11 M) with brucellosis, a systemic disease that affects different organs and tissues, and 91 healthy sublects (60 F,31 M). in these two group, the level of erythrocyte arginase activity was measured by TDMU method. The hemoglobin concentration of whole blood was measured at Sysmex K-1000 automatic cell counter. The levels of other serum parameters were measured at Beckman Synchron CX5 autoanalyzer (ALT, AST, GGT, LDH activities, BUN, creatinine, Ca and albumin). The levels of eryhrocyte arginase, serum ALT, AST, GGT, LDH activities and, BUN, creatinine were significantly higher in brucellosis as compared with controls. On the other hand , the levels of serum Ca and albumin were significantly lower in brucellosis as compared with controls (p< 0.05, p< 0.01 ). The results of this study indicate that the causes of brucellosis can also make changes in the level of erythrocyte arginase activity as in the other biochemical parameters measured in this study.
