Abstract

The present study was conducted to determine the effects of melatonin on the structural changes in the kidney tissue of rats under the electro-magnetic field (EMF) exposure. Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups, each with in rats. The group I was set as control, receiving daily intra-peritoneal injections of saline for two weeks. The group II was exposed to EMF at the rate of 27.17 MHz for 2 weeks, 2.5 hours Per day. The group III was exposed to EMF, similar to the group II» while the rats were intra-peritoneally injected with a single dose of 4 mg/kg melatonin each day for 2 weeks. At the end of the experiment, the samples kidney tissues were collected from under the ether anesthesia for the electron microscopic evaluations on the photographed samples. In the kidney samples, focal glomerular thicking in the glomeruli and pedicel erasen were observed. Melatonin supplementation was observed to overcome the deleterious effect EMF exposure.
