Abstract

Asthma is a chronic inflamatory disease and corticosteroids are the mostly used antiinflamatory agents in asthma treatment. However they don't have an effect -on leukotrienes which have an important role in asthma pathogenesis. İn the recent years there's an improvement in the outcomes of asthma management by the use of leukotriene antagonists in clinical practice. The present clinical trial was performed to investigate effectiveness of leukotriene receptor antagonist montelukast in asthma management. Montelukast (10mg/gun) was added to the maintenance therapy of 60 patients with chronic asthma for a duration of 3 months and the findings of last 3 months period without the drug and the period of drug use were compared. Furthermore the side effects of the drug were determined. 16 of the patients were excludedand and total 44 patients with asthma (mild persistent 22, moderate persistent 19, and severe 3) were evaluated. After 1 month, 2 months and 3 months trials demonstrated that day time and night time symptoms, need for inhaled |beta2-agonist were found reduced, FEV1 (%20) and PEF (%22) values increased significantly (p
