Abstract

Diabetes and prediabetes are endocrine disorders that are known to be associated with morbidity and mortality, with an increasing incidence worldwide. Impaired insulin sensitivity and glucose intolerance play an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetes. Upon the increasing worldwide prevalence of diabetes, recent studies have shown the potential effects of vitamin K on glucose homeostasis in the prevention and management of the disease. Known for its function in blood clotting, vitamin K has been reported to have a beneficial role in improving insulin sensitivity and glucose intolerance, preventing insulin resistance, and reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Both animal and human studies have shown that the vitamin K-related protein osteocalcin is associated with this process by regulating adiponectin levels. However, with its anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering effects, the positive effects of vitamin K on glucose homeostasis are also noteworthy. In this review, we aimed to evaluate the effects of vitamin K on glucose homeostasis and to investigate the possible mechanisms of action
