Abstract

Probiotics are defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) as live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in consuming probiotic products mainly due to the nutritional value and healthy aspects associated with these products. The benefits of probiotic products on human health include an increase in lactose tolerance, reduction in digestive system infections and allergy symptoms, prevention of cancer and high cholesterol risk and stimulation of human immune system. Probiotic products have become an important commodity in worldwide markets because of their positive effects on human health, and this has led food producers to use special health claims on products containing probiotics. Therefore, some countries and organizations developed their own legislative systems to ensure food safety and consumer protection. The aim of this study is to give information about legal regulations on probiotics in some countries and organizations like FAO/WHO, the United States of America, the European Union, Japan, India and Turkey.
