Abstract

This study aimed to determine mediator variables related to mathematical literacy using single and multiple mediation models employing the Barron and Kerry (BK), Sobel and bootstrapping mediation tests. The data were obtained from 4848 student constituting the Turkish participants of PISA 2012, with the classroom climate, mathematical literacy, mathematics anxiety, and mathematical self-concept included as variables. The samples of the countries were determined according to the two-stage stratified sampling method. Since the aim of this study was to determine the mediator variables related to mathematical literacy, it was based on a relational survey model. The results of the single and multiple mediation model analyses revealed that the variables of mathematics anxiety and mathematical self-concept mediated the relationship between classroom climate and mathematical literacy. In the single mediation model, the effect size value of the math anxiety mediator was determined as 0.23 and the effect size value of the math self-concept mediator was determined as 0.12. In the multiple mediation model, the math anxiety variable's specific indirect effect was determined as 0.18, the math self-concept variable's specific indirect effect was determined as 0.05, and the total indirect effect was determined as 0.23. The perceived positive classroom environment and the teacher’s maintenance of classroom discipline were found to reduce the students’ anxiety in the mathematics course and increase their mathematical self-concept, which in turn positively affected their mathematical literacy. In addition, it was found that the effect size of the mathematics anxiety variable was higher than that of mathematical self-concept, indicating that the anxiety variable played more important role in increased student achievement.
