Abstract

Firearm wounds are one of the main topics in forensic medicine. However, olfactory nerve lesion due to these types of injuries is rarely seen. In this study, we aimed to report a case with loss of olfactory nerve due to being injured by pellet of shotgun. Our case was a 31-year old male. There were damages due to pellets of shotgun in head, neck and chest regions in physical examination. Presence of a pellet in the left anterior fossa was determined on a CT scan. After the patient recovered, he reported that he couldn’t smell. Thereupon, judicial report was asked to be rearranged by prosecution office. It was determined that olfactory nerve had been injured. 20 types of smell tests gave negative results. O t o r h i n o l a r y n g o l o g i c a l examination revealed that sense smell was completely lost. In forensic report, it was concluded that the loss of the smelling sense had the characteristics of “loss of function in any sense and organ”. Since this case was considered to be interesting, we decided to publish
