Abstract

In this study, the possible asymmetric effects of crude oil prices on food prices in Turkey are examined for the period 1998:Q1-2020:Q2 based on the Phillips curve using nonlinear bounds test methodology. Econometric analysis confirms the presence of asymmetric cointegrated relationship among oil prices, output deficit, exchange rate and food price. The empirical findings suggest complete and nonlinear oil price pass-through in Turkey; 10% increase in real crude oil (USD) prices over the long term results in a 6.6% increase in food prices, while their decline do not seem to have any impact upon food prices. Further, the results point out that 10% depreciation in real exchange rate leads to a 15% increase in the food prices.
