Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum period is physically, socially and emotionally a though time for the parents and for the baby to become a family. We tried to investigate how the anaesthesia method affects patients underwent cesarean delivery, as a factor also impressing this period. METHODS: Two hundred six parturients underwent elective cesarean delivery in Celal Bayar University Hafsa Sultan Hospital were recruited in our study. After demographic data and anaesthesia method were noted, EQ-5D health survey and Katz GYA scale were questioned face to face at postoperative 24 hours, and called by telephone at postoperative 5th day. RESULTS: The percentage of patients who had general anaesthesia was 35.2 %(n: 71), while 19.8 % ( n: 40) had epidural anaesthesia and 45 % (n: 91) had spinal anaesthesia. Among all these three methods, EQ-5D health survey revealed that outcome at postoperative 24 hours was the best in epidural anaesthesia and general anaesthesia was the worst (p: 0.007). Katz GYA scale at postoperative 24. hours showed that epidural anaesthesia was better from the other methods for regaining daily life activities (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our study figured out that the epidural anaesthesia had the most effective role among the methods in regaining daily life activities after elective cesarean delivery which was showed using EQ-5D health survey and Katz GYA scale.
