Abstract

Health tourism is defined as travels to a country other than the country of residence for the continuation of the well-being of people, improving of health and in case of illness, treatment, care and rehabilitation. Tourism activity within the scope of health tourism has grown rapidly in the last decade, and has led countries to take part in the sector in this field with the added value it provides to the economies. In this study, the relationship between health tourism and economic growth was investigated by using the hidden cointegration test of, Hatemi-J-Irandoust (2012) and the time varying asymmetric causality analysis. For this purpose, quarterly data between the periods 2002: q2- 2020: q1 were used. With this examination, the hidden cointegration relationship in which asymmetric effects reflecting positive and negative shocks are included in the analysis can be revealed. The findings show that there is a long-term hidden cointegration relationship between variables in positive and negative shock situations. In addition, the causality relationship between health tourism growth and economic growth has been examined with time-varying asymmetric causality analysis. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that there is a causality relationship between the positive and negative shocks of the variables, but the causality relationship has not remained constant over time, it has changed.
